The Holocaust Series

The series began as a single memorial piece in memory of Sadie Silverman, Frank Root's mother-in-law. Root became immersed in his research and felt compelled to continue creating images evocative of the victims' suffering. Artistically, he is committed to exploring the possibilities of his unique medium to its fullest extent.

The material is homasote, a commercially produced recycled paper product. The pastels are hand made to Root's specific needs of intensity and texture. Each piece begins as a drawing directly on the surface of what is to become the final piece. The drawing is cut apart, carved, and reunited. At this writing there are no extant preliminary sketches; each piece represents its own entire process of drawing and carving.
